Dry Ice

"Dry ice" is formed when liquified carbon dioxide is allowed to expand to atmospheric pressure. A snow-like solid is formed, which can be hydraulically pressed into blocks, pellets or micropellets. Large blocks can be cut into slabs to meet customer requirements. At one atmosphere, dry ice has a temperature of -109°F. With warming, dry ice will sublime from solid form directly to gas without passing through a liquid phase.

Dry ice is used extensively to refrigerate dairy, meat, frozen and other perishable food products during transportation. It is also used as a cooling agent in varied industrial processes such as grinding heat sensitive materials, shrink fitting and vacuum cold traps. Dry ice passing to gas can even be used to produce fog-like theatrical effects.
